How to keep your student house deposit

April 7, 2019

Moving into student accommodation is a very exciting time for young people – for many, it’s their first time away from home, and their first step towards independence.

It can also be a daunting, confusing experience, however, with a range of information coming from all angles.

Here at Loc8me, we like to keep it simple, and cut out the unnecessary stuff, to give you clear guidance on student living.

In today’s blog, we provide a few helpful pointers, to help secure your student house deposit.

Check Your Details
First things first, folks – check your details…

Our helpful staff will communicate with you (mainly via Whatsapp), and will send a full inventory via Google Drive, including details regarding the condition you received your student accommodation in.

It is good practice to keep records of all repairs, when you reported them, and what actions your landlord took. (You may add photos to the inventory to accompany these documents ).

Our helpful tennant fees guide details everything you need to know about student accommodation costings.

Spring Clean
Giving the place a deep clean will ensure the house is spotless for the landlord walkround.

Remove all rubbish and take it to the local tip, or even offer to take old clothing and furniture to a local charity shop. For example, in our Loughborough location there are a number of charity shops just around the corner from our office.

Here at Loc8me, we offer a pre-check out service with one of our trained advisors, who will complete a walk round the house with you, to spot any potential areas that may need extra care and attention.

Report Maintenance
Keeping up with your maintenance is important to ensure you keep your deposit.

Send your meter readings in to ensure bills are accurate, and keep a list of your mail for the next 3 months, so you can let those companies know when you move out.

What happens if I have damaged something?
Hey, it happens! First of all, don’t panic – you can get it fixed.

The most important thing is to report the damage to your landlord right away. Make sure you have the damage fixed, and take before and after photos as evidence.

Booking maintenance is easy with Loc8me. Simply go to our website and click Book Maintenance in the top right hand corner of the home page, and report the issue you are having.

You can add an image and description of your problem, and we will send one of our helpful maintenance staff over to help. Simple!

There you have it! Our quick guide to help you secure your student housing deposit. If there is anything you are unsure of, please do not hesitate to contact a member of our friendly team.

Our website offers plenty of information too, including details for all locations Loc8me deal with, which includes student accommodation across Hull, Loughborough and Lincoln.
