Top tips for students living on their own for the first time

April 29, 2019

Here at Loc8me, we like to keep you in the know-how.

We understand that living on your own for the first time and adjusting to your new student life can be tough. (Hey, some of us have been there ourselves!)

Whatever your location, be it Hull, Lincoln or Loughborough, we have compiled this list of top tips for living on your own for the first time.

Easy Peasy Cooking
You may already be a cooking maestro, or a complete novice, but the most advised practice would be to purchase a cookbook for quick and simple meals.

We also suggest cooking in bulk and freezing meals. Not only will this keep your fridge stocked, it will keep you from spending unnecessarily on takeaways. (Though don’t forget, at our Loughborough houses, we offer student tenants free pizza at Peter Pizzeria!)

Cleaning up after yourself
It might sound pretty obvious, but cleaning up after yourself will keep your student accommodation neat and tidy, and prevent the build-up of everyday mess.

Create a cleaning and bin rota, so everyone knows their weekly cleaning duty.

As well as keeping clean, make sure all maintenance or damage is reported to our team. You can do this by clicking on the ‘book maintenance’ button on the Loc8me home page!

Stay stocked/shop at value places
It is always best practice to make sure you keep your student accommodation stocked up.

There are plenty of value supermarkets in the vicinity of all our student accommodation locations. For example, the local Lidl near Hull University, or the Tesco Superstore in our Lincoln location is popular with students.

You can find food and house supplies, such as kitchen and bathroom products and other amenities, all at affordable prices (meaning you can spend your change at the student union!).

It would be best to order weekly food shopping, rather than doing this as a daily task, as you are less likely to overspend.

Create your own space
Most student accommodation will be shared, so it is important for you to create your own space to have a little ‘me’ time.

Bringing items such as your own pillows, pictures and favourite books will bring comfort and a sense of home.

Here at Loc8me, we take pride in making sure all our student tenants feel at home. If there is anything you are unsure of, you can always speak to a member of our team at your local Loc8me office.

Budget
Once the student loan comes in, it is very tempting to spend the lot! (We know the feeling!)

Create a monthly spend budget planner, which will outline your incomings and outgoings for the month. It would be handy to also diarise when to pay your bills.

You will need to look at your monthly spends, such as tuition fees, travel costs, and household bills. Make sure you keep an eye on your energy consumption, as this can potentially eat away your household bills.

Loc8me have a helpful tenant fees guide, which details everything you need to know about student accommodation costings.
